Costumed Kids, Toddlers to Trick or Treat at Rep. Bachmann’s Office and Ask for a Special Treat This Halloween: Stop Voting Against Healthcare for 10 Million Children in Need

With SCHIP Set to Expire in a Matter of Days, Rep. Bachmann’s Backwards Priorities of “Billions for Iraq War, Zero for Kid’s Healthcare” Could Be a Nightmare for Thousands of Minnesota Kids

Waite Park, MN – A frightening mob of costumed kids, toddlers and their parents will gather at Rep. Bachmann’s office at 4:00 P.M. on Wednesday to ask for a special treat this Halloween: a vote to provide healthcare for 10 million kids in need.  With the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) set to expire in a matter of weeks, this Halloween season could be a very scary one for the 30,100 Minnesota children whose future in the program may be in jeopardy with the President’s threatened veto of the latest bipartisan Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act.

On October 24th, without the support of Rep. Bachmann, the U.S. House passed a revised version of the bipartisan children’s healthcare bill that included strengthened language to address any and all of the Congresswoman’s concerns about illegal immigrants, adults and children from high-income families benefiting from the program.  But even with these concerns effectively taken off the table, Rep. Bachmann still chose to once again stand with Bush over the thousands of parents in her district who go to bed every night praying their children don’t get sick or hurt.  Rep. Bachmann continues to play a partisan game of all tricks and no treatment with critical legislation that would mean healthcare for 30,100 more kids in Minnesota – legislation that is supported by 80 percent of the American public, including 61 percent of Republicans.

With only a small handful of votes needed in Congress to override the President’s veto, Minnesota parents, kids will plead with Rep. Bachmann to do the right thing: If you can support spending half a trillion dollars fighting an endless war in Iraq, how can you justify opposing spending a fraction of that on healthcare for your most vulnerable constituents: low-income kids in need?

As the RNC Presidential Convention approaches many questions have been raised regarding the access and legal framework of demonstrations. During a forum at St. Thomas University last week citizens were able to ask questions of St. Paul Police leadership. Many members of the peace community were present.

The focus of the forum was on “community policing” and civil disobedience. Assistant Chief Matthew Bostrom, in charge of RNC Convention affairs, did the bulk of the speaking and set the bar high for himself and his office, saying that access will not be limited to “pens” for demonstrations and that the Secret Service would not take over security around the city.

The RNC Welcoming Committee, the most organized anarchist and anti-authoritarian group protesting the upcoming RNC Convention did not attend the forum. An explanatory hand-out cited historical police abuses and that “authority belongs to the people, not the police”.

How would you like your car to get 70 miles per gallon? Sounds pretty good as gas prices shoot up again. Minneapolis Mayor RT Rybak has a Toyota Prius that averages 70 MPG and can sometimes hit 99.9 MPG. The reason: his hybrid fueled vehicle has been converted so it can plug in to a standard electrical outlet. He likes the results so much he wants the company that does the conversions to move to Minnesota so the state can be the Texas of the next energy revolution. The Mayor took The UpTake’s Bretton Jones out for a spin to show us the Prius and talk energy policy.
