As part of its hosting of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Denver will also host 10 major digital artists from around the world. The artists will present work which enables citizens to discuss democracy in innovative ways. DJ Spooky of New York joined the mayor at the announcement of Dialog:City Monday, May 5, 2008. The event is being coordinated by the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs, whose director, Erin Trapp, outlined the detailed schedule of artist presentations.

It costs thousands of dollars for legal residents in the US, eligible to become citizens, to begin the process. On April 19th in Colorado, a Naturalization drive brought volunteers and legal residents together to file for citizenship.

Part of a nationwide Citizenship Day initiative, Ya es Hora ¡Ciudadania!, the drive aimed to give legal residents (those with Green Cards), who meet the requirements to apply for citizenship, help overcoming logistical and financial obstacles keeping them from the benefits and responsibilities of full American-hood.

According to one estimate, there are some 100,000 people in Colorado alone who meet the requirements to apply for Citizenship. Many of them are discouraged by filing costs, mountains of paperwork, and fear of mistakes.

Colorado is a fickle state. Weather can go from scalding to shivery in moments. This particular Saturday was a preview for the dog days of the convention: hot and dry, with the famous mile high designation mandating sunscreen.

I’ve been wondering for some time now what the Democratic campaigns can pull off as they struggle to keep engagement high in all fifty states while slugging it out delegate by delegate in the remaining primaries. In a piece of serendipity, I called up a friend on April 19th, and she told me there was an Obama rally going on in Civic Center Park.

In one way or another, most of the speakers and the people I spoke with at the sparsely attended event were grappling with the engagement question as well. And the enthusiastic supporters were grappling with the steady beat of the sun, where only a few days before sleet had stung faces and forced coat collars up.

Post offices are always a zoo on April 15th. I guess it shouldn’t have been too much of a surprise to see voter registration organizations and others taking advantage of the long lines at the downtown Denver Post Office.
