Dawn Mikkelson knows a lot about the plight of Northwest Airlines workers. She’s been documenting their story since the airline’s mechanics went on strike in 2005. Her soon to be released film called “The Red Tail” documents the trail of broken dreams left by a powerful corporation. A few weeks before the Northwest/Delta merger was announced, she sat down with The UpTake’s Chuck Olsen to talk about what the merger would mean to the remaining Northwest workers. On the same day US Senator Norm Coleman announced he would seek a second term, labor union leaders said Coleman’s record shows he puts corporate special interests ahead of middle-class Minnesotans such as working families, homeowners, students and veterans.

In Rochester, leaders of the Southeast Minnesota Area Labor Council (SMALC) explained how the policies Coleman supports harm working Americans.

In August of 2005, the mechanics at Northwest Airlines went on strike. The Red Tail is the story of one of those mechanics, Roy, who would see his job of 23 years outsourced to Hong Kong. The film poses the question: “What if workers were as globally connected and organized as their employers?”

The Twin Cities-based filmmakers are holding a fundraiser event, Rock the Red Tail, on Saturday, March 22. There will be some excellent live music from Joanna James, Mike Gunther, and more. Proceeds from this event will go to support the final shoot of the film The Red Tail as they travel to mainland China.

Watch for a forthcoming UpTake interview with the filmmakers about the state of labor and the proposed merger between Northwest Airlines and Delta.

It seems ironic that after September 11th security guards, the very people responsible for taking care of some of the most important buildings in this city, are without affordable health care or proper protection on the job.

Javier Morillo of SEIU Minnesota local 26 estimates there are 8 security guards for every one police officer. These guards work along side officers at the Hennepin County government center checking for weapons but are not afforded bullet proof vests like the officers are. So, after negotiations broke down last Saturday, they decided to walk off the job on Monday February 25th in an unprecedented one day strike. Morillo said contracts like the one they are asking for here in Minnesota have been agreed to in both San Fransisco and Los Angeles.

Allison Herrera captured some of the rallies during a bustling downtown rush hour in downtown Minneapolis. To quote Javier Morillo, “It’s about dignity.”
