Joe Bodell:  Welcome to the live blog -- feel free to jump right in with your preview thoughts for tonight's debate between Barack Obama and John McCain.
7:30
Mike McIntee:  Welcome to The UpTake's coverage of the first Presidential debate between Senators Barack Obama and John McCain. Â Â On our home page we have two video feeds. Â One from a TV station in Memphis that will carry the debate and another from CSPAN which will be focusing on the audience watching TVs outside the debate
7:31
Mike McIntee:  Stick around after the debate and we'll have the Citizens' Spin Room... where people who are NOT pundits talk about what they've seen. Â We'll be streaming that live too.
7:31
Mike McIntee:  Our first topic tonight is what questions would you like the candidates to answer.
7:32
[Comment From typewriter]
I want to hear McCain actually spell out some kind of feasible economic policy
7:32
Mike McIntee:  Joining us to help with tonight's live coverage we have a great panel which includes Joe Bodell of Minnesota Campaign Report, Professor John Logie of the University of Minnesota and many of our UpTake correspondents.
7:33
Joe Bodell:  /waves
7:33
Jennifer Whigham:  What kind of Palin questions do we think McCain'll get, if any?
7:33
Logie:  In the interests of full disclosure, since my last activity on The Ultake, I have done som phone-banking for the Obama campaign. I invite participants in the liveblog  to weigh whether my admitted bias informs my comments tonight.
7:34
Mike McIntee:  Robin Marty who is with CIM and oversees several independent websites including Minnesota Monitor will be with us too.

7:34
Logie:  And, apparently, forgotten how to type.
7:34
[Comment From typewriter]
@ Logie, practicing on a typewriter, they keep you honest
7:34
[Comment From Chuckumentary]
Also in the interest of full disclosure, I've been coaching Sarah Palin on mastering interview techniques.
7:35
Mike McIntee:  Was that before or after the Katie Couric interview Chuck?
7:35
Joe Bodell:  Logie, despite your bias, where do you think the expectations game points right now? Are expectations higher for Obama or for McCain right now?
7:35
Logie:  @ Chuck - In what respect, Charlie?
7:35
Chuckumentary:  Mike: During - we had a wireless audio connection. Every word was mine.
7:36
Logie:  I think Obama was expected to outpoint McCain, who has persuaded everyone that he is ONLY comfortable in the townhall meeting format.
7:36
Chuckumentary:  Yeah, she calls me "Charlie" too
7:36
[Comment From Mspdude]
How much do you think the focus will be shifted from the planned foreign affairs to the economic situation?
7:36
Logie:  One consequence of the events of this week is that now McCain gets credit for showing up.
7:36
Chuckumentary:  Logie, you said "outpoint" - is that coming from debate club? Is it like boxing?
7:36
Logie:  And he has a built-in alibi for appearing unprepared.
7:36
[Comment From typewriter]
@Logie, do you think Obama runs the risk of being labeled "wooden" much in the same way Gore was?
7:37
Mike McIntee:  I would be surprised if this debate did not get into some of the domestic financial issues that have dominated the week.
7:37
Logie:  Sure. The term circulating on the cable channels is "professorial." Â
7:38
Logie:  As a professor, it saddens me to think that my colleagues are notable (to a great degree) for their failure to speak clearly and/or decisively.
7:38
[Comment From typewriter]
Michelle Obama has said that she thinks Barack needs to "relax" do you think he feels pressured by historical stereotypes of his race to, if anything, appear over prepared?
7:39
Joe Bodell:  I think one thing that has to be considered here is that Obama has had plenty of practice. The long primary season meant plenty of opportunity to hone debating skills. On the other hand, if the debate does stick to foreign policy issues, expect McCain to bring up the term P.O.W. at least a few times and use his personal story as proof of his expertise on the issue. Â Both campaigns have been playing the expectations game this week, it will be interesting to see how the expectations play out.
7:39
Logie:  I think the racist stereotype of the "angry black man" has encouraged Obama to curtail any of the flavors of discourse that might be processed as "angry." He has rarely resorted to what might be described as "righteous indignation" -- a typical arrow in the quiver of most presidential candidates.
7:40
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
I think Obama's style will go over great tonight with independents and undecideds. They'll prefer his long, thought out answers to McCain's erratic knee jerk responses. There is no evil for McCain to defeat in an economic crisis
7:40
Joe Bodell:  If the McCain campaign's web ads published earlier today (with the text "MCCAIN WINS DEBATE") are any indications, it sounds like they expect to say their candidate won no matter what.
7:40
Logie:  @ U.J. - I don't ecessarily think McCain will appear knee-jerk tonight.
7:41
Logie:  He, too, can ill afford to appear angry, UNLESS it maps as "righteous indignation."
7:41
[Comment From raya79]
hello
7:41
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
@Logie I do. If he's preparing for a foreign policy debate, this is. I fully expect him to come out swinging at Obama, on the surge, on Iran, etc
7:41
Chuckumentary:  That's right Joe, this is all really a formality since McCain has won the debate. Going through the motions. :-)
7:41
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
*that is
7:42
Jennifer Whigham:  Raya - welcome!
7:42
Logie:  I think the McCain ad is telling not because it shows his team will spin whatever happens as a "win" but more because it suggests that McCain might never have been serious about skipping the debate.
7:42
Logie:  Had he seriously considered withdrawing, the ad buy probably would/should never have been made.
7:43
Logie:  BOTH sides will be spinning whatever happens tonight as a "win."
7:43
RobinMarty:  sorry -- I was so mesmorized by the JAck Cafferty clip on TPM I forgot to read where we are. Â I'll catch up now

7:43
What are your expectations for John McCain's performance tonight?
Very High
 ( 5% )
High
 ( 14% )
Not sure
 ( 27% )
Low
 ( 32% )
Abysmal
 ( 23% )

7:43
Joe Bodell:  I think McCain's most ardent supporters like it when he's more knee-jerk. Â He has problems when he's more scripted and runs the risk of looking like a rather creepy old guy
7:44
Logie:  Good point, Joe. The "green screen" scripted presentation was his worst in this campaign.
7:44
RobinMarty:  I think it will be pretty hard to avoid the creepy old guy look when he's considered old by most of the people who will be watching
7:44
What are your expectations for Barack Obama's performance tonight?
Very High
 ( 23% )
High
 ( 55% )
Not Sure
 ( 9% )
Low
 ( 14% )
Abysmal
 ( 0% )

7:44
Logie:  And I thought McCain DID perform well in his Minnesota town hall meeting.
7:44
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
@Joe You're right about his ardent supporters, but how will it go down with undecideds?
7:44
[Comment From Mspdude]
I think it will be interesting to see how many times Obama mentions Biden...and how many times McCain mentions Palin.
7:45
RobinMarty:  I find it hard to belive there are really undecideds when two candidates are so polar. Â I think its more people who want to pretend they haven't already made their choice
7:45
Mike McIntee:  I think John McCain will avoid mentioning Sarah Palin at all costs in a debate about foriegn policy.
7:46
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
ha
7:46
[Comment From Tierney]
I have to say, I'm afraid McCain is planning to do something totally bizarre to steal another news cycle.
7:46
Jennifer Whigham:  Tierney - my fear, as well.
7:46
[Comment From Mspdude]
That's what I think as well. But Obama may need to break out the Biden references more since he has experience that can be leveraged.
7:46
Joe Bodell:  @UJ -- good question. Â Mike is on the money -- I wouldn't be surprised at all if Obama tries to draw McCain into mentioning Sarah Palin's name.
7:47
[Comment From Don]
I hope there will be some actual debate here for once. Direct exchange between the two candidates.
7:47
Logie:  The structure WILL allow direct exchanges - and this is a very good thing . . .
7:47
[Comment From Tierney]
Oh yeah, get him to describe the russian "trade missions" she goes on
7:47
Logie:  CNN is now pointing out that Obama is not necessarily a great debater.
7:48
Logie:  The talking heads are arguing that Obama "lost" Saddleback.
7:48
[Comment From Tierney]
I've spent some time in alaska, I went on a trade mission once. We brought a shipment of beer to sibera
7:48
[Comment From Mspdude]
@Logie A very good thing for which side?
7:48
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
I hate the narrative that he's "not a good debater." It should be "Dumb people can't keep up with all the words!" /snark
7:48
[Comment From gamoonbat]
I do not have great expectations, but I was glad to see the structure had changed a bit
7:48
RobinMarty:  I find it hard to believe any lawyer can't debate.
7:49
Logie:  Direct exchanges are a good thing for democracy, methinks, but it might slightly advantage McCain.
7:49
Logie:  In my view, McCain has more leeway for attacks.
7:49
Chuckumentary:  Good point by Gergen - McCain has a good sense of humor in the town hall format, and can be very natural. Obama is stiff even with his humor.
7:49
[Comment From Diane]
Obama is an intellectual. That does not equate to being a bad debater. Most people can't understand an intellectual, I guess.
7:50
Mike McIntee:  If you think this debate will have any effect on John McCain's base, you only have to watch these interviews Chuck Olsen did at a McCain rally to realize that is not possible.
7:50
Logie:  If you're right, Diane, perhaps I'll close my laptop and start drinking now . . .
7:50
[Comment From gamoonbat]
I think Obama is much better at debate than his reputation. He is not combative, but he makes an excellent overall impression.
7:50
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
Obama just comes off as stiff. He's exactly what Americans want in a president, but not in a presidential candidate, ironically.
7:51
JasonB:  So, have I missed anything? 3 year old not wanting to give up the goast.
7:51
Logie:  Obama's intellectualism is being processed by many in his audience as a lack of passion.
7:52
[Comment From Diane]
Actually, I think that's a good point, Jeff, although I don't see Obama as stiff.
7:52
[Comment From Diane]
Exactly, Logie
7:52
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
Logie, agree completely. But we'll all be happy for it once he's elected.
7:52
[Comment From Tierney]
I agree, the base won't change their minds. If Obama wins, he'll get back the momentum from last week and build lead in the polls.
7:52
Logie:  I think he IS passionate, but also rightly concerned about how emotional presentations will be mapped against his race.
7:53
[Comment From Tierney]
I think his plan at the beginning is to step back and let McCain do some of the work for him.
7:53
[Comment From Natalie]
If Obama is such a poor debater how did he win the nomination?
7:53
[Comment From Diane]
For the first time in weeks, Gallup Poll today increased the electoral college numbers significantly for Obama
7:53
[Comment From GlobalPunditOrg]
can anyone get stats on Cindy McCain's stock ownership in AIG and Lehman?
7:53
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
He's absolutely passionate, but there's the "angry black man" thing he's worried about, plus he just communicates his passion differently.
7:54
Logie:  In Rhetoric, we speak in terms of three core appeals, ethos (authority, credibility), logos (logic, reason) and pathos (stirring emotions positive OR negative). Obama has been relying on the first two almost exclusively.
7:54
[Comment From HowWasTheShow]
Will we still have time to get to the liquor store after the debate is over, i.e. what's the projected eta of the end time? I might need a drink after it's over.
7:54
Jennifer Whigham:  HWTS - Lowry Hill Liquors delivers! Â (Might be out of your delivery area, though.)
7:54
Jennifer Whigham:  Wait, maybe not Lowry Hill. Â But some liquor store.
7:54
Logie:  He's NOT a poor debater, neither is he an excellent debater.
7:54
[Comment From gamoonbat]
Obama likes to play off of a crowd. That rarely happens in these debates, but the Mississippi crowd may be different
7:54
JasonB:  I'm gonna need a drink tonight, that's for sure
7:55
Chuckumentary:  OK, I have some energy drink and vodka now.
7:56
[Comment From HowWasTheShow]
Thanks Jennifer. Settling in. We're watching on the projection screen.
7:56
Logie:  Any McCainiacs here? I'm interested in your read of McCain's prospects.

JasonB:  A bit of Caffery talking about Pailn. It's a must see

7:57
Logie:  CNN says Kennedy had a seizure, waa hospitalized and returned home.
7:57
[Comment From Diane]
Yeah, applause to Cafferty for saying what he did.
7:57
[Comment From GlobalPunditOrg]

7:57
jacksonwest:  Hello from the Mission in beautiful, sunny San Francisco, California!
7:58
Logie:  Welcome, Jackson . ..
7:58
JasonB:  @jackson, or sure, rub it in :)
7:58
[Comment From Chuckumentary]
Jackson, welcome brother!
7:58
[Comment From Jack]
I like Obama. However, I fear if he gets elected, it will be the equivilant of a seditive for the people, and he will fail keep his message of change.
7:59
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
@Jack, so we should elect someone whose bad policies will keep us angry?
7:59
jacksonwest:  we can go video live here if you all want. its pretty raucus in the theater

7:59
[Comment From Noah Kunin]

Here's a pre-debate poll: Can John McCain stand for 90 minutes?
8:01
[Comment From Natalie]
Who chose the topic for tonight?
8:01
Chuckumentary:  UJ: Yes - robot legs.
8:01
[Comment From Diane]
Here we go!
8:01
Noah Kunin:  The topic was chosen in conjunction with the campaigns and the commission however the moderator has the final say.
8:01
Logie:  The topic was negotiated by the campaigns. Oddly both agreed happily to foreign policy first, economy last.

8:02
Noah Kunin:  Final say on the questions that is.
8:02
RobinMarty:  Jim Leher has no eyelashes
8:02
Logie:  but the events of the past week suggest that economic questions will edge in.
8:02
JasonB:  it was great to hear the comments from Leher before he went live on the Mogulus stream.. that was funny
8:02
Logie:  Lehrer DOES have sexy eyeliner, though.
8:02
[Comment From Jeffrajones]

8:03
Chuckumentary:  What is this, the 1940's? How about a computerized coin toss?

8:03
[Comment From MattJhsn]

jacksonwest:  its an obama lovefest in here. they are doing the wave

8:03
Noah Kunin:  If only the State of the Union had the same rules about cheering.
8:03
RobinMarty:  I want rock paper scissors
8:03
Chuckumentary:  First observation: Obama is taller and better looking. Game over!
8:03
Noah Kunin:  CNN has an audience reaction meter....
8:03
jacksonwest:  By the way, that was all Schlomo. Â I use the shift key. -JW
8:04
Mike McIntee:  Finances off top.
8:04
RobinMarty:  leher looked like he was tuning in tokyo
8:04
[Comment From Diane]

8:04
[Comment From Tierney]
Think the SOU would only be 15 minutes then - Amen
8:04
[Comment From gamoonbat]
the global financial crisis!
8:04
Logie:  CNN has a wacky scorecard. Brazile ALREADY has McCain at -1 point.
8:04
[Comment From Diane]
didn't you hear that McCain won the debate?
8:04
RobinMarty:  I'm drinking anytime anyone says "wallstreet v mainstreet"
8:05
[Comment From Diane]
what about when McCain says "my friends", Robin?
8:05
Logie:  I recommend only SIPS on "Change" from Obama and "My friends" from McCain.
8:05
JasonB:  @Robin, you are so toast
8:05
[Comment From Jacc]
What a time to have to reboot. wallstreet v mainstreet
8:05
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
Robin, took about 6 seconds for the first one. I expect at least 25 tonight.
8:05
[Comment From Griffin]
700 billion is a lot of money, no potential about it
8:05
Chuckumentary:  I'm going to take a pee every time I hear "golden parachute"
8:05
RobinMarty:  I got a sixpack

Noah Kunin:  Response in this room to McCain mentioning Kennedy is indignant..
8:06
[Comment From typewriter]
McCains not feeling to great
8:07
Jennifer Whigham:  Yes, my crowd here yelld at the screen a bit on the Kennedy comment.
8:07
Logie:  McCain seems oddly low energy . . .
8:07
[Comment From GlobalPunditOrg]

8:08
Noah Kunin:  McCain is not answering.
8:08
[Comment From Natalie]
He is rambling
8:08
[Comment From MattJhsn]
Does anyone think MacCain sounds like Lehrer.
8:08
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
I liked that Obama looked at the screen. McCain appears to be having a DISCUSSION with someone off screen
8:08
JasonB:  zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
8:08
RobinMarty:  ummm--- did Palin prep him for this debate?
8:08
[Comment From howwastheshow]

jacksonwest:  Cant wait for the fall Depends ad campaign starring McCain
8:08
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
Did he not prepare at all?
8:08
Noah Kunin:  Obama had clear 4pt plan - did subtly accept the premise that the package was needed though which the progressive movement is currently rejecting.
8:08
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
@Josh, just thinking the same thing myself
8:08
[Comment From Jeffrajones]
I hope Stephen Colbert can do a "Blue Screen Challenge" based on McCain's response!

Noah Kunin:  Moderator = Awesome.
8:08
[Comment From Leslee]

8:08
[Comment From gamoonbat]

8:08
[Comment From Mspdude]
Wow, that was a poor start for McCain
8:08
[Comment From typewriter]
Obama says he hasnt seen the plan?
8:09
[Comment From Natalie]
No eye contact with the screen. Yes lets go back to the question
8:09
[Comment From Jacc]
I prepared more than McCain. Half a bottle of wine down.
8:09
[Comment From MattJhsn]
I hope a 700 billion dollar plan is more then a couple of paragraphs.
8:09
Noah Kunin:  Obama says he hasn't seen the language, ie the actual bill. This is becaue there are only working drafts no actual drafts of a bill.
8:09
[Comment From denise]
jacc, true dat
8:09
jacksonwest:  i think someone dusted a little grey in Obama's hair to make him look distinguished.
8:09
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
What if someone were to answer the question?
8:09
Logie:  Obama is arguing "I saw this coming and warned the pertinent parties."
8:09
Noah Kunin:  Obama:
8:10
Chuckumentary:  jackson: that's actually cocaine in Obama's hair.
8:10
[Comment From Diane]
Obama is coming out strong
8:10
[Comment From gamoonbat]
What about the foreign oil, Barry?
8:10
[Comment From Diane]
McCain HOPES SO on voting for the plan?
8:10
Noah Kunin:  Obama: "clearly need to intervene"
8:10
[Comment From typewriter]
He also warned LOL
8:10
Noah Kunin:  WHOA audience reaction tanking on McCain
8:10
[Comment From Jeffrajones]
Nader's voice in this debate would be helpful in actually offering some substantive differences to the rhetoric we already are hearing tonight!
8:10
Logie:  McCain: "Me too! I did that too!"
8:10
[Comment From courtney]
Obama is so much more authoritative.
8:10
Noah Kunin:  CNN audience reaction,.
8:10
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
@jackson Yeah the grey seems to come and go from speech to speech. I HOPE its the lighting and not shameless pander dye
8:10
JasonB:  I Like Ike!
8:10
[Comment From Natalie]
He is going to vote for a plan that has not been made.
8:10
[Comment From typewriter]
Did he mention Esienhower?
8:10
[Comment From Jacc]
My plan to fix the economy? 1 mil for each question that is not answered in debate.
8:10
[Comment From Tierney]
Wonder if Barry will mention Mr. Rick Davis?
8:10
[Comment From MattJhsn]
Hmm, don't remember that warning. Must not of gotten through.
8:10
RobinMarty:  audience reaction goes down every time mccain speaks
8:10

8:10
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
Seriously?
8:10
[Comment From Mspdude]
He's going to vote for the plan. Not smart to say when its not done.
8:11
Logie:  Is that credible coming from the man who ALSO said "the fundamentals of the economy are strong" last week?
8:11
Noah Kunin:  LIE 1: McCain said he would FIRE the Sec chair. Did not ask for resignation.
8:11
[Comment From typewriter]
McCain, ready to fail from day 1
8:11
[Comment From Natalie]
He would bring in WW II just as expected
8:11
[Comment From typewriter]
@Logie, that is the question of the whole economic argument isnt it?
8:11
RobinMarty:  Someone didn't get his pre-debate nap
8:11
Noah Kunin:  Prez does not have authority to fire SEC chief.
8:11
Chuckumentary:  Noah - I think he later asked for the resignation.
8:11
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
and you don't see anything wrong with that either.
8:11
[Comment From Jacc]
I can't believe he said "Invasion" very undude.
8:11
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
I've heard that "Wrote two letters" schtick before. Is this really Eisenhower or just some fable
8:11
Logie:  CNN has a green tracking line for independents and McCain is, apparently, scoring with them . . .
8:12
[Comment From MattJhsn]
I saw in a AP article the SEC chair is and old enemy of McCain.
8:12
[Comment From Tierney]
I thought he wanted to the president to FIRE the SEC charirman (which he can't do) and then he called it the FEC
8:12
[Comment From Cravenor]
fire somrbody else
8:12
[Comment From denise]
drink robin
8:12
Joe Bodell:  While neither candidate directly answered the first question, it's worth noting that Obama answered a *related* question. McCain turned "financial crisis" into "Eisenhower in WWII".....
8:12
RobinMarty:  drinking
8:12
Jennifer Whigham:  David - not that we know of (on popping out of the screen)
8:12
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
Shortterm THANK YOU!!!!!
8:12
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
Oh my word.
8:12
[Comment From Diane]
McCain gave us a little history lesson...so nice of him
8:12
Chuckumentary:  yay it's funny time!
8:12
[Comment From Jacc]
I thought WalMart killed mainstreet.
8:12
[Comment From Jack]
I would support $700 billion dollars to help alleviate world hunger. A noble sacrifice from the fattest nation on earth.
8:12
Logie:  Good joke from McCain!
8:12
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
Wow, he looked SO OLD right there
8:13
[Comment From typewriter]
This is reminding me of the Jack Johnson, John Jackson debate from Futurama
8:13
[Comment From Diane]
He IS old
8:13
Logie:  Clever way to poke fun at the old age concern . . .
8:13
[Comment From GlobalPunditOrg]
$5,200 per person man, wow
8:13
RobinMarty:  did they give thme matching podiums so they are the same height?
8:13
Noah Kunin:  Moderator asking for more interaction. Will we get it?
8:13
[Comment From denise]
fundament problems or fundamentals are strong?
8:13
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
McCain: no I will not respond to Obama. Here are my talking points.
8:13
[Comment From GlobalPunditOrg]
EXACTLY TYPEWRITER!!
8:13
[Comment From gamoonbat]
Obama does look a bit afraid of facing McCain down.
8:13
[Comment From Jacc]
McCain will not look at Obama, talk to Obama, or be called short.
8:14
[Comment From denise]
fundamental belief -- I should drink when he says fundamental
8:14
Noah Kunin:  I'm not sure on what basis we are still the greatest exporter..
8:14
[Comment From denise]
drinking
8:14
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
Oh yes, please keep saying "fundamental" over and over
8:14
Joe Bodell:  This is strange. Â McCain isn't attacking Obama OR answering the questions directly.....
8:14
RobinMarty:  someone take away Castellanos numbers before he wastes them all in the first 5 questions
8:14
[Comment From typewriter]
BTW, where are the flag lapels?
8:14
[Comment From MattJhsn]
Loving this dual camera view.
8:14
Noah Kunin:  ...given our huge trade defieict.
8:14
[Comment From Jacc]
Drink Denise
8:14
[Comment From Natalie]
That was just a sound bit remark
8:14
JasonB:  McCain should avoid the word "fundamental"
8:14
jacksonwest:  Eh. I'm thinking something more "Mad Max" is in the days ahead of us.
8:14
[Comment From GlobalPunditOrg]
i dunno -slave labourers are pretty productive!
8:14
[Comment From Laurie]
McCain sounds nervous and rehearsed.
8:14
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
@ Joe have you ever heard him answer a question?
8:14
[Comment From typewriter]
How would a 700 BILLION dollar bill reduce spending John?
8:14
[Comment From Diane]
McCain should know about spending
8:14
[Comment From Cravenor]
give it time, temper temper
8:15
jacksonwest:  Earmarking is marijuana!
8:15
[Comment From typewriter]
Palin should know about earmarks
8:15
[Comment From denise]
oooh first reference to drugs
8:15
[Comment From Jacc]
McCain is counting on his tie confusing people.
8:15
[Comment From Rith]
Palin loves earmarking
8:15
[Comment From Mspdude]
Spending is completely out of control. So lets spend another 700billion.
8:15
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
Think McCain taking on his own party will go over well here
8:15
[Comment From typewriter]
BEARS!
8:15
jacksonwest:  Medical earmarks are legal here in California.
8:15
Joe Bodell:  @Jacc -- it's an optical illusion
8:15
Logie:  McCain is looking better now - he DOES seem passionate about this topic.
8:15
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
@Jacc haha.
8:15
RobinMarty:  say bridge to nowhere!!!
8:15
[Comment From typewriter]
WHAT?!?!?!
8:15
[Comment From denise]
old pen!
8:15
Noah Kunin:  WTF?
8:15
[Comment From courtney]
you wave that sharpie
8:15
Noah Kunin:  Old pens?
8:15
[Comment From typewriter]
NO SPENDING!!!
8:15
JasonB:  Did McCain just talk about bears?
8:15
[Comment From MattJhsn]
Did he say million?
8:16
Logie:  But he just threw Obama a lifeline. Why is Bear DNA different from Palin's Seal DNA earmark?
8:16
[Comment From Laurie]
Maybe the tie sends subliminal messages to independent voters - put foil on your heads, folks!
8:16
[Comment From Jacc]
He's been smoking a little to much earmark,
8:16
[Comment From gamoonbat]
Are polar bears endangered, John? How do they differ from other bears?
8:16
[Comment From MattJhsn]
million? big deal.
8:16
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
He's just falling right into his stump. I swear he really did not prepare for this at all
8:16
Joe Bodell:  McCain claims to have ânever sought a single dollarâ in pork barrel funding. It's just not true. â¦ McCain in 2006 co-sponsored legislation that asked for $10-million for an academic center at the University of Arizona to honor the late Supreme Court chief justice William Rehnquist. In 2003, Frank noted, McCain won authorization to buy property to create a buffer zone around Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, and in 1992, McCain asked the Environmental Protection Agency to provide $5-million toward a wastewater project in Nogales, Ariz.â
8:16
RobinMarty:  anyone else having a "my pen, MY PEN!" kids in the hall moment?
8:16
[Comment From denise]
fundamental differences.
8:16
[Comment From Cravenor]
President Palin?
8:16
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
And here is an actual response.
8:16
[Comment From howwastheshow]
Anyone else think that Hilary was likely a tougher debate opponent than McCain?
8:16
[Comment From GlobalPunditOrg]
Mac has said that at 18 debates now
8:16
RobinMarty:  fundamental? Â drink
8:16
[Comment From Diane]
you go, Obama
8:16
[Comment From typewriter]
Obama can nail him on the spending thing if he has some balls
8:16
RobinMarty:  there again
8:16
[Comment From Diane]
fundamental
8:17
[Comment From Jacc]
Earmark, smoke.
8:17
JasonB:  300 BILLION for Wall-street slicks
8:17
Joe Bodell:  Body slam on tax cut difference. Â Obama is much more clear here than he was in the primary-season debates.
8:17
RobinMarty:  independents for obama!
8:17
[Comment From Diane]
Obama sounds strong
8:17
[Comment From Natalie]
Why does Obama keep saying McCain is right. Not a good way to start. Should start with what he disagrees with.
8:17
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
Obama sounds REALLY solid but he is just not taking shots. What the hell? He opened with an attack! Keep it up
8:17
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
Ooooooo nice Obama.
8:17
[Comment From Cravenor]
bail me out
8:18
[Comment From gamoonbat]
BO is looking right now.
8:18
jacksonwest:  Right, except "corporate tax cuts" aren't a slur in the politics of the right, "earmark spending" is.
8:18
[Comment From Rith]
Tax cut, sure, every 4 years they all say that
8:18
Noah Kunin:  Wow, I think McCain just nuked the server for Citizens Against Government Waste. Can't get access to it.
8:18
Logie:  This is Obama's best answer to date - focused and clear language.
8:18
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
Because he isn't lying.
8:18
Joe Bodell:  Apologies for my intermittent silences -- I'm listening and watching, but I'm sharing baby duty tonight
8:18
[Comment From typewriter]
He cant appear to be an angry black man
8:18
RobinMarty:  Joe, it's 8pm -- why is the baby still up?
8:18
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
You can only answer that way if you KNOW what you're talking about.
8:18
[Comment From typewriter]
McCain sounds like an old school Regan Conservative
8:18
Joe Bodell:  7 weeks old. Â Never sleeps for more than 2 hrs at a time.
8:18
[Comment From Natalie]
Who cares is he appears as angry
8:19
[Comment From Jacc]
How much is our inasion costing us?
8:19
[Comment From Rith]
he is
8:19
[Comment From typewriter]
Obama has to attack him on his double standards
8:19
RobinMarty:  I won miss independent!
8:19
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
Man, okay, he needs to stop talking about his history and history in general.
8:19
[Comment From MattJhsn]
McCain just accused of millions, Obama talks about billions
8:19
[Comment From Diane]
McCain is starting to get emotional...go, McCain...get mad
8:19
[Comment From gamoonbat]
The Keating Five had nothing on the crooks these days.
8:19
Logie:  WHAT? Did he just say "I didn't win 'Miss Congeniality'? Because his running mate DID.
8:19
[Comment From denise]
sheriff fundamental
8:19
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
McCain should stop smiling and/or laughing
8:19
[Comment From typewriter]
Call him a liar
8:19
[Comment From Cravenor]
good fer u joe, god bless
8:19
[Comment From Diane]
good for you, Obama...
8:19
jacksonwest:  Loopholes always sounds kinda dirty.
8:19
[Comment From Jacc]
Obma needs to shoot the sheriff, but he cannot shoot the deputy.
8:19
[Comment From Jay]
Nader should be there. Hes on the ballot in 45 states this year. Democracy can only suffer for his exclusion.
8:19
Logie:  Smart move for Obama to interrupt.
8:19
Mike McIntee:  After the section about the financial crisis finishes we will have a poll asking how you think the candidates did.
8:19
[Comment From Natalie]
Here is his opportunity and he is taking it/
8:19
Joe Bodell:  Good interruption. Â If Obama lets McCain have the "he'll increase spending, I'll keep taxes low" point, McCain comes out ahead.
8:19
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
@type I wish.
8:19
[Comment From Rith]
Nader should be here
8:20
Noah Kunin:  First cratering of Indepednents audience reaction vs Repub and Dems. Was quick - not sure was in response to interruption or what McCain was saying.
8:20
[Comment From Griffin]
He needs to mention plain earmarks
8:20
RobinMarty:  I just realized -- wasn't today supposed to be about foreign policy?
8:20
[Comment From MattJhsn]
earmarks a going nowhere.
8:20
jacksonwest:  Last 8 years? Try last 100.
8:20
Joe Bodell:  Focus on getting middle class back on track = net positive for Obama. Â Keep focus on areas where Obama's polling lead is strongest.
8:20
[Comment From Cravenor]
sorry,
8:20
[Comment From typewriter]
@robin haha
8:20
[Comment From Cravenor]
McCain
8:20
[Comment From Cravenor]
past,
8:20
JasonB:  @Robin, yeah, it was
8:20
[Comment From Cravenor]
Obama
8:20
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
Robin, there will apparently be no foreign policy debate.
8:20
[Comment From Rith]
Tax cuts and economic stimulis checks are just bandaids
8:20
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
Oh man, is this middle school. Okay Johnny, talk to Obama and tell him you're sorry.
8:21
[Comment From MattJhsn]
Just like campaign finance reform... going nowhere.
8:21
RobinMarty:  fine by me --- didn't we piss them all off anyway...
8:21
[Comment From denise]
lehrer opened it up for domestic economy blah blah with the opening comment about "security" being home
8:21
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
I don't see him talking to Obama.
8:21
[Comment From Jacc]
Moderator or marriage couselor?
8:21
[Comment From Natalie]
McCain is not addressing his real tax position
8:21
[Comment From Mspdude]
lot more working people out there than business people.
8:21
Noah Kunin:  McCain was slighly off in reference to Ireland. The corporate tax rate is 12.5% there.
8:21
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
Don't businesses use any criteria for locating other than tax rates?
8:21
RobinMarty:  2000 what?
8:21
[Comment From MattJhsn]
Ireland it not a typical tax rate. They are lower then typical.
8:21
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!
8:21
[Comment From Diane]
there you go...my friends
8:21
JasonB:  mmmmm, pork pork pork
8:22
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
5,000 dollars for healthcare?!!!!
8:22
[Comment From Rith]
I would like to see these projects in a nice list. Let us check them, see if they are worth it.
8:22
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
I think they're too professional to engage each other head on. Plus, McCain was probably coached to stay calm and look at Jim so he didn't fly off and call Obama a c***t
8:22
[Comment From Jacc]
Still can't tell who McCain is talking to. I'm guessing the Fox News camera.
8:22
RobinMarty:  I should have more babies to make more money
8:22
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
Yeah F'ing RIGHT!
8:22
[Comment From Laurie]
Tax rates don't necessarily account for credits, loopholes, etc. So comparing US rate to other countries may not be apples to apples.
8:23
[Comment From Diane]
McCain questions who Obama calls rich? This after he said you have to make more than $5 million?
8:23
Noah Kunin:  This is a great turn around by Obama.
8:23
[Comment From typewriter]
Nice linking McCain to loopholes
8:23
Chuckumentary:  snap
8:23
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
Clearing his throat is his tell.
8:23
jacksonwest:  I should get a job finding tax loopholes for rich folks. Â Bet it pays more than writing.
8:23
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
@Laurie Yeah and Ireland doesn't have 300 million people and the world's largest military industrial complex. What are they paying for? The Delorian and beer?
8:23
[Comment From typewriter]
Obama needs to work the healthcare angle more
8:23
[Comment From denise]
booyah! who's the tax man now?
8:23
Joe Bodell:  @jacksonwest, yes it does.
8:23
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
Wow. Obama is looking strong tonight; really being aggressive.
8:23
JasonB:  is McCain going to do his Monty Burns laugh?
8:23
RobinMarty:  BAM! Â Take that, McCain -- yer heatlh plan sukz
8:23
[Comment From typewriter]
McCain is getting mad....
8:24
[Comment From Mark]
A lot of problems could be solved if we cut the huge wasteful military budget. where is nader?
8:24
[Comment From gamoonbat]
Democrats like those loopholes as well - energy conservation, historic preservation,......
8:24
Logie:  McCain is smiling in response to Obama's critique - he thinks he has something.
8:24
Joe Bodell:  "Festooned"? Seriously?
8:24
[Comment From Cravenor]
temper temper....
8:24
RobinMarty:  pantaloons!
8:24
[Comment From Laurie]
Besides, I think U2 is paying most of Ireland's taxes. :)
8:24
[Comment From denise]
drink every time mccain says festooned
8:24
[Comment From Rith]
yes, end the war, stop spending so much on military
8:24
[Comment From typewriter]
He said Talking the Talk and Walking the Walk...
8:24
[Comment From Jacc]
We need to legalize and tax earmarks. Just like Peter Tosh said.
8:24
Noah Kunin:  Wow, I'm surprised that McCain is not responding directly to the taxin gof health care benefits. McCain camp usually takes great umbrage at that charge.
8:24
[Comment From GlobalPundit.org]
"festooooooned "!
8:24
[Comment From typewriter]
Did anyone catch that?
8:24
RobinMarty:  this is turning into a lampoon!
8:24
[Comment From denise]
fundamentally fair
8:24
Chuckumentary:  yo i'm late for my bassoooon lesson!
8:24
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
Are you KIDDING ME?!?!?!?
8:25
[Comment From Rith]
I'll get the shot glass when they go to break
8:25
[Comment From Natalie]
McCain is going to continue the Bush tax plan.
8:25
[Comment From Diane]
Here McCain goes with his lies again
8:25
RobinMarty:  ok, can someone say mainstreet wallstreet again?
8:25
[Comment From denise]
oh yeah..bring up the oil company profits
8:25
[Comment From gamoonbat]
mercuh..... mercuh.... mercuh.... damn the furriners and their oil..... This is all about foreign policy!
8:25
jacksonwest:  Crossing my fingers that Obama brings up the Keating 5 and the S&L meltdown. Â Seems rather relevant to the current economic discussion.
8:25
[Comment From Jacc]
If the ties says it, it's true, must obey the tie.
8:25
JasonB:  @Robin, get'n tristy?
8:25
[Comment From Rith]
no tax breaks for oil companies!
8:25
[Comment From Cravenor]
here we go
8:26
RobinMarty:  I want to lick mccains tie -- I bet it tastes like peppermint
8:26
[Comment From Natalie]
As long as McCain keeps lying what chance does Obama have.
8:26
JasonB:  I think Obama is cleaning his clock
8:26
[Comment From typewriter]
@Natalie good point
8:26
Chuckumentary:  God, please don't let McCain smile anymore, it hurts America
8:26
Logie:  McCain MUST NOT giggle like that ever again.
8:26
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
@RobinMarty That was great.
8:26
[Comment From Jacc]
Robin, I'll bet it tastes like freedom.
8:26
[Comment From Cravenor]
keep on offence
8:26
[Comment From Diane]
Obama is killing McCain
8:26
[Comment From Mspdude]
McCain's got a little bit of the GWB cackle.
8:26
RobinMarty:  freedom neckware...
8:26
[Comment From Laurie]
I think Obama is clearly winning too, but I support him. Wonder what McCain's supporters think
8:27
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
@Logie yeah its like he's just laughing AS his response
8:27
Joe Bodell:  I don't care if I get criticized to high heaven because McCain's teeth were broken in Vietnam. They look HORRIBLE under natural light.
8:27
[Comment From enraged youth]
I really hope mccain wins.
8:27
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
Great question on making sacrifices.
8:27
[Comment From Rith]
more mass transit
8:27
RobinMarty:  so is gloria borger out having a smoke? Â when's she going to vote?
8:27
[Comment From Diane]
Hell McCain has enough money to get his teeth fixed
8:27
jacksonwest:  Yeah, subsidies for corn growers to turn food crops into fuel for cars! Â Woohoo!
8:27
[Comment From Rith]
better organized communities.
8:27
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
Yes! Healthcare.
8:27
[Comment From enraged youth]
so does obama. if mccain wins maybe the american people will finally revolt
8:27
[Comment From gamoonbat]
Get the mortgage and housing crisis fixed and the banks might not fail.
8:28
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
This is a bad question for Obama to be ducking. Big opening for McCain.
8:28
Noah Kunin:  Obama's 10 year goal of foreign oil indy. grates on those of us who have studied energy policy. It's 100% impossible. A 25 yr goal is more reasonable if that. Of course the Repub. energy policies are worse...
8:28
[Comment From Griffin]
look at that CNN boost
8:28
[Comment From enraged youth]
obama doesnt even want universal healthcare anymore. he's already sold out to the healthcare companies
8:28
[Comment From Julie Sandburg]
Obama should say something about dental care to McCain
8:28
[Comment From Ali]
Neither of the two candidates care about the American people. Obama spits on the fact that he is half white and McCain has supported Bush for the past eight years. Nader has my vote on November 4th and anyone who cares about this country please do the same. Nader 08
8:28
[Comment From typewriter]
I think McCain's attacks are more effective than Obama's reasoned arguments
8:28
RobinMarty:  audience seems to love it best when you don't answer questions. Â I thnk that means something
8:28
[Comment From Rith]
ha ha!! New grid?? do you know how much that will cost!
8:28
MattJhsn:  I agree 10 years seems undoable. We are deep deep deep in this oil dependence hole
8:28
Noah Kunin:  This is getting some of Obama's highest marks on audience reaction. Haven't seen much sunlight between party identifiaction.
8:28
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
Anybody watching the reaction trendlines? Independents and Republicans get off on China bashing and spacewalking
8:28
Logie:  Obama is dodging this question much as most any politician would. Most NEVER tell you what they'll cut. Points to McCain if he does.
8:28
[Comment From enraged youth]
Im with ali
8:29
[Comment From Jacc]
China sells poisoned ties.
8:29
[Comment From Rith]
Fix the development pattern, sprawl is destructive
8:29
[Comment From Mark]
he says to cut spending and doesn't talk about cutting the wasteful military budget
8:29
jacksonwest:  San Franciscans cheer for "most liberal voting record." Â And these people vote for Newsom and Pelosi.
8:29
[Comment From Mark]
same with obama
8:29
[Comment From GlobalPundit.org]
somehow , mccain's passion is trumping mccain's lack of logic
8:29
Noah Kunin:  Whoa, is the the 1st time McCain has said he's against ethanol subsidies?
8:29
[Comment From RossL]
Nader has supported renewables since the 70s
8:29
Logie:  POint for McCain - he specifies at least ONE cut - ethanol subsidies.
8:29
[Comment From enraged youth]
if obama and the democratic party stopped being so centrist on everything... perhaps they could counter mccains rash attacks with reason and a really progressive stance
8:29
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
@Rith, right on.
8:29
[Comment From howwastheshow]
Who has the most liberal voting record? It's not Obama.
8:29
[Comment From typewriter]
@jackson, obama does NOT have a liberal voting record
8:29
[Comment From Julie Sandburg]
Noah- no, I recall him saying something about it before
8:30
[Comment From Guest]
Cut defense spedning! Make corporations pay their taxes!
8:30
MattJhsn:  whoh huge topic change
8:30
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
Wait, what? It ended up costing 400 million and you haven't built it?
8:30
jacksonwest:  Particularly in Silicon Valley, which is fueled by defense spending.
8:30
[Comment From typewriter]
@Logie, and he wants to cut military spending now?
8:30
[Comment From RossL]
where's barr? nader? mckinney? baldwin? theyre all on enough ballots to win this election, but theyre not in the debate
8:30
Noah Kunin:  I think that's a good point Logie but that wasn't the question. McCain doesn't want ethanol subsidies so saying he will get rid of them in a reduced revenue environment is not answering the question.
8:30
[Comment From gamoonbat]
We do not have the domestic reserves to become independent if that is what he is thinking.
8:30
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
Shyeah I WISH he was a liberal
8:30
[Comment From Cravenor]
they are both all over the road, k
8:30
[Comment From Jacc]
McCain knows that big numbers impress.
8:30
Logie:  McCain is citing a noted conservative journal for that "most liberal" claim.
8:30
[Comment From Guest]
Russ Feingold?
8:30
JasonB:  McCain know's he's bombing on the given topic - trying to shirt to national security
8:30
[Comment From Natalie]
Now that is a lie about the Obama voting record. He makes these general sound bit statements that people will remember
8:31
[Comment From gamoonbat]
Jim Lehrer is winning.
8:31
[Comment From Jeff Rosenberg]
Lehrer is doing a great job moderating. He's really going after the questions.
8:31
jacksonwest:  If Obama has the most liberal voting record in the senate, must be news to Barbara Boxer.

[Comment From typewriter]
@Logie, yes I know, but in reality Obama voted for the war, for the patriot act, for gitmo, and for FISA
8:31
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
And McCain doesn't?!
8:31
Logie:  RIGHT: Obama is a centrist democrat. MANY senators are more liberal (Feingold!)
8:31
Noah Kunin:  How did Obama vote for the war?
8:31
[Comment From typewriter]
No, McCain did as well
8:31
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
Wait, no, Obama was against the war in 2002. Wasn't even in the Senate to vote on it.
8:32
[Comment From Rith]
Well, loets have universal health care then, the gov can conrtol spending better
8:32
[Comment From Mark]
Nader is the only person who is against all of them
8:32
[Comment From enraged youth]
LOBBYIST affect and shaped YOURE platform TOO obama!
8:32
[Comment From gamoonbat]
Obama took office after the votes to go to war in Iraq.
8:32
[Comment From Mark]
HE FUNDED THE WAR
8:32
[Comment From Rith]
Universal health care = group discount
8:32
Logie:  Obama voted for funding the war - perhaps that was the point?
8:32
[Comment From TylerM]
Obama voted to fund the war many times
8:32
[Comment From fundamental denise]
oooh..now we hear about lobbyists -- bets on when the fannie mae $15,000/month mccain advisor comes up?
8:32
[Comment From typewriter]
@ultimate, he voted to fund it
8:32
[Comment From TylerM]
300 billion dollars because of Obama
8:32
RobinMarty:  what's a google -- you have confused the mccain
8:32
Noah Kunin:  Gotchya, thanks for the clarification.

[Comment From typewriter]
So what would the federal gov do then?
8:33
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
You don't care about your veterans!
8:33
[Comment From Diane]
spending freeze? on puleeze
8:33
Joe Bodell:  "Using a hatchet where you need a scalpel" -- great line.
8:33
jacksonwest:  Wait, don't I pay for Social Security every month?
8:33
[Comment From Jeffrajones]
One of these two will be president mainly because alternatives are shut out of the process! Open the debates to third party candidates!!!
8:33
Logie:  GREAT response from Obama.
8:33
MattJhsn:  Freeze national defense only!
8:33
[Comment From Diane]
and McCain now cares about veterans?
8:33
[Comment From Cravenor]
yeah, germany, s korea
8:33
[Comment From Natalie]
Nice analogy
8:33
Noah Kunin:  He would kill infratrstructure investment? That would result in a LOT more money spend down the road.
8:33
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
I make a distinction between authorization and funding, as defunding is only one tactic of many, but GLAD to hear people pissed about the war. Sometimes its like we're not even there
8:33
[Comment From Jacc]
Spending freeze? Mccain hates the CIA,FBI,Social Security, . . .
8:33

8:34
RobinMarty:  oooh.... first kennedy, now clinton -- what a maverick!
8:34
Joe Bodell:  McCain: âI Am A Deregulator. I Believe In Deregulation.â While speaking about the cable and satellite television during an appearance on CNNâs âOn the Money,â John McCain said, âI am a deregulator. I believe in deregulation."

8:35
Joe Bodell:  Indeed Mike.
8:35
[Comment From Rith]
I don't think we as a society are responsible enough for nuclear
8:35
Noah Kunin:  This issue sticks in my craw. I think building nuke plants is a better alternative to new coal plants since capture and sequesteration is untested and unlikely to be deployed on a large level
8:35
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
@Mike No, they DECIDE

8:36
Logie:  Obama solid on the moment not being one for tax cuts for the wealthy.
8:36
[Comment From Rith]
there is also geothermanl
8:36
MattJhsn:  The 10 year energy plan HAS to have nuclear in it, but I haven't looked at the details of it.
8:36
jacksonwest:  Right, because the $700 billion financial bailout totally isn't state capitalism.
8:36
[Comment From Diane]

Obama is not opposed to nuclear power. The waste issue is a big problem, particularly in Nevada.
8:36
[Comment From Jacc]
I just wish someone would win this debate.
8:36
Joe Bodell:  It's not just a big problem in Nevada, it's political suicide.
8:37
Noah Kunin:  Another huge difference in audience reaction. Indy voters do NOT like McCain talking about handing insurance over to gov. I guess they see through that point.
8:37
[Comment From TylerM]
ethanol and biofuels are wasteful. solar and wind.
8:37
Noah Kunin:  @Joe B NIMBY issues make it political suicide everywhere I think.

[Comment From Tierney]
I mean why McCain
8:37

[Comment From fundamental denise]
waste also issues in other western states -- the trains go through to get it to Nevada, yucca on same aquifer as California
8:37
jacksonwest:  Sound of cans being opened echo through the audience here. Â People are starting to slur back to the screen.
8:38
[Comment From Jacc]
He knows because Arizona has no money? Not the same as controlling spending.
8:38
[Comment From Laurie]
McCain is sounding whiny here
8:38

[Comment From Natalie]
I wish Obama would say I agree with such in such instead of I agree with McCain
8:38
[Comment From Julie Sandburg]

8:38
Chuckumentary:  are we having an orgy with miss congeniality? if so, why is there a scary old man here?
8:38
Joe Bodell:  Opposed the White House on Iraq management? Â Really?

Obama was against the surge.
8:40
Joe Bodell:  If Obama can make the point that the Surge was a tactical success in the context of a strategic failure, he can win this question hands down.
8:40
[Comment From TylerM]
get out of iraq. let's stop killing people in iraq and afghanistan. we need fewer troops in the whole middle east. we are agitating those people. only nader would cut down the bloated wasteful military budget.

I wonder how much steroids they had to pump into that geezer to keep him standing for this debate?
8:46
RobinMarty:  what is the differnce between a tactic and a strategy?
8:46
Noah Kunin:  Is McCain saying that the surger was strategy and tactics? Cause it's clearly a tactic.
8:46
[Comment From michael ispan]
GB had a smirk

8:46
RobinMarty:  strategy means  saying "I meant to do that" after something succeeds?
8:47
[Comment From howwastheshow]
Bewildering the American people is a strategy. Picking Pailin was a tactic.
8:47
Mike McIntee:  And then the fairies come in and spread pixie dust.
8:47
Noah Kunin:  McCain has no idea what he's talking about! I'm shocked that on these military terms he has no idea what he's talking about

8:47
Joe Bodell:  From the Obama campaign:  REALITY: The Claim That Obama Voted To Cut Off Funding For Our Troops Is âHighly Misleadingâ And Using The McCain Standards, It Would Be âLiterally Trueâ To Say That âMcCain Urged A Veto Of Funding For Our Troops.ââLieberman also said that "colleagues like Barack Obama were voting to cut off funding for our American troops on the battlefield." That's a highly misleading claim that McCain also touted in an ad this summer. Obama has voted in favor of war-funding bills at least 10 times since becoming a senator. The McCain camp and Republicans cite one vote Obama cast against a funding bill as justification for their claim â but that vote came after President Bush had vetoed a version of the bill that included a date for withdrawal from Iraq. In fact, most Republicans voted against that 2007 war-funding bill Obama and the Democrats supported. McCain was absent for the vote, but he urged the president to veto the bill. As we said about this subject previously, âBased on those facts, it would be literally true to say that âMcCain urged a veto of funding for our troops.â But that would be oversimplified to the point of being seriously misleading.â And the same goes for Liebermanâs claim at the convention.â [Factcheck.org, 9/3/08]
8:47
Noah Kunin:  Strategy = Goals Tactics = Methods
8:47
MattJhsn:  Wow Obama seems smart.
8:47
[Comment From typewriter]
@Noah I agree, the double think is quite startling
8:47
[Comment From Yellowbird]
A strategy is an overall plan; a tactic is an at once occurence, like this weeks tactic of FLANKING the Democrats with the economic debacle while we were busy arguing the issues. THAT was a tactic. Their overall strategy is to keep us busy while they jimmy the vote machines everywhere they can.
8:48
[Comment From Rith]
In my lifetime, George Sr. was in Irak, they have been at this for awhille
8:48
Noah Kunin:  That McCain thinks tactics is some....slight? against the surger is absurd. Totally completely absurd.

8:53
Joe Bodell:  There was a great article in the NYT recently about the poppy trade in Afghanistan several weeks ago. Some frightening stuff, and it is quite possibly the primary issue in that country. It drives everything -- poverty, terrorism, state control, everything.
8:53
Noah Kunin:  I'm hoping the moderator brings the incident up in a more expansive question on how to work (or not work with) the new government in Pakistan.
8:53
JasonB:  2 American chopers were fired at on the boarder. The pilots said they never fired back.
8:53
[Comment From UltimateJosh]
Americans have been crossing the border into Pakistan, as in troops on the ground, since 2006. The recent exchange of fire is nothing except that, and I hate to say it, corporate media is paying attention

But considering the general poll difference between Republicans and Democrats, Obama is doing well simply to establish parity with McCain on the issue. If he can establish that look, he has a strategy and McCain has a strategy, we each think our own strategy is the right one, he's gone a long way toward evening the partisan national security split in the polls.

9:09
Joe Bodell:  âMcCain claims that Obama's opposition means that he also opposed calling the IRGC terrorists. We find otherwise: Obama cosponsored an earlier bill that also called for designating the IRGC as a terrorist organization; The Kyl-Lieberman amendment did more than just label the IRGC terrorists. Obama stated at the time that he opposed the bill on the grounds that it constituted 'saber-rattling'; McCain claims that Obama must oppose calling the IRGC a terrorist group because Obama's Web site doesn't say anything about the IRGC. McCain's argument is a glaring example of the logical fallacy of argumentum ad ignorantiamâ¦ We do know that McCain's claim that Obama's opposition to the bill was based on an unwillingness to label the IRGC as terrorists is falseâ [FactCheck.org, 6/5/08]

[Comment From Diane]
Obama is sounding strong
9:12
Joe Bodell:  McCain is distorting history when he suggests that Barack Obama is bucking American presidential tradition in expressing a willingness to meet with the leaders of countries hostile to the United States. Hitler apart, U.S. presidents have held meetings with some of the greatest mass murderers in history. It is also incorrect to suggest, as both McCain and President Bush have done, that the mere willingness to meet or negotiate with foreign dictators constitutes "appeasement," a term used to describe actions such as the surrender of the Czech Sudetenland to Nazi Germany in a desperate bid to avoid World War II.â [Washington Post Fact Checker, 5/21/08]

Yep, the rest of the word is wondering what is wrong with us.
9:30
RobinMarty:  my husband called missle defense a republican wet dream
9:31
Noah Kunin:  SDI and missile defense are not the same things.
9:31
Logie:  And I would not give mcCain credit on the torture issue, given McCain's support of the Bush administration's "extreme interrogation."
9:31
[Comment From Rith]
of course, the US has been in the torture business for a long time
9:31
[Comment From adrianneleighg]
